WALK LIKE A ZOMBIE…THE HORRORPOPS
by C-Town on January 31st, 2007
The Horrorpops are a Danish Psychobilly band that melds Punk, Surf Rock, Horrorcore and Rockabilly together to create some rockin’ good tunes. Anchored by lead singer and Bassist Patricia Day, they started out in 1996 with a relatively small following but by 2004 had developed a cult like fanbase. Drawing upon their love for Horror flicks, their songs are ghoulishly orchestrated with sometimes funny lyrics but always rock hard. Their shows are like a traveling circus and they even have Go-Go dancers as part of the group. So, grab you a case of Miller High Life and a pack of Camel Turkish Golds and rock out to the scary sounds of the Horrorpops.

CITY CLASSICS: THREE 6 MAFIA…MYSTIC STYLEZ
by C-Town on January 31st, 2007
Long before the Oscars, Three 6 Mafia was one of the hardest groups outta Memphis,Tennessee. Their tight ass beats set them apart from every other group in Hip-Hop and could arguably be considered the creators of Crunk. “Mystic Stylez” was their first album and is an indication of how their production would help influence countless others in the future. Besides all that, it also has the best summer cut to ride and blaze to (aptly titled “Da Summa”). “Tear Da Club Up” would end up getting a lot of bouncers lumped up and close down numerous clubs on opening night. Straight gangsta shit, laced with boomin’ bass and wicked and raunchy lyrics. Yup, that sums it up.
“Tear Da Club Up” mixed with Boondocks:

1. Da Begining
2. Break Da Law ‘95′
3. Da Summa
4. Live By Yo Rep (Bone Dis)
5. In Da Game
6. Now I’m Hi Pt. 3

X-Funk: Studio One Funk & the Uncanny X-Men #105-108…
by C-Town on January 31st, 2007

This week’s X-Funk is brought to you by the new Apple iPhone, the Oranje Tulp and the letter O. Geah… It’s on and popping. I got a fresh bit for allay’all this time ‘round, ya’hear?
I noticed that it’s been a cool minute since I dropped some sweet reggae music… but with this being X-Funk day and whatnot, hows can I satisfy the Funk requisite but still satiate that uncontrollable urge for some sweet reggae music? I gotcha covered…
The legendary Studio One was founded in 1954 by the one Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. I’m sure anyone remotely familiar with reggae music has heard of the sound system. Dodd was responsible for initiating the careers of reggae music’s greats including, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Burning Spear, Toots & the Maytals, John Holt, Horace Andy, Ken Boothe, and Alton Ellis; some of which y’all may be familiar with. For this particular compilation, the good folks at Soul Jazz have compiled about 80 minutes of funk classics done the reggae way. Studio One Funk is utterly sick. I usually don’t list the tracks, but for this album, I’ve got to…
1. Cedric Im Brooks – Shaft
2. Jacob Miller – Westbound Train
3. Roy Richards – Another Thing
4. Pablove Black – Sidewalk Doctor
5. Alton Ellis – African Descendents
6. Cedric Im Brooks – Chicken
7. Lloyd Williams – Reggae Feet
8. Jackie Mittoo – Hang Em High
9. Prince Francis – Beat Down Babylon
10. Soul Bros – 007
11. Prince Lincoln – True Experience
12. Sound Dimension – Love Jah
13. The Sharks – Music
14. Prince Moonie – See A Man’s Face
15. Lee Arab – Now
16. Vin Gordon – Steady Beat
17. George Philip – One One
18. Underground Vegetables – Melting Pot
19. Alton Ellis – It’s A Shame
20. Cedric Im Brooks – Skylarking
And for those following the mutants, we got X-Men 105-108. In #105, Phoenix fucks up Firelord. #106 features Professor X having a dream like Tony Soprano did in that one episode. In #107, the X-Men go and holler at they alien homies, the Shi’ar. And in #108, the X-Men save the fucking universe like they always do, and no one hears about it nor cares. Professor X also gets to bring his alien paramour, Lilandra to Earth so he can have some in-house on tap…
Seen?!?!?!?!?!?!?
For a taste of the funk meeting reggae, check out this short bit featuring a reggaed-out theme from Shaft… Jesse Jackson appears as well! Rainbow Coalition in the house!!!
And… for all you player haters… Cartoon characters be cockblocking too. Check the X-Men as they impede each other’s progress towards all things greasy…
LICENSE TO THRILL…THE GUN CLUB
by C-Town on January 31st, 2007
The Gun Club was formed in 1981 by Jeffrey Lee Pierce as a way to get free drinks. Who knew that when they released their first album “Fire of Love”, it would be regarded as a classic today. Heavily influenced by Robert Johnson and the Blues, they implemented some of that Blues sound into their music. What you get is a very distinctive version of Punk. They achieved global success but most fans of Punk either loved em’ or hated ‘em, depending on who you ask. Since I was bumpin’ BDP and Schooly D in the 80’s, I had no idea who these cats were. Sadly it took the PS2 version of Scarface to hip me to Gun Club (”Sex Beat” is featured on the game). When I went back and checked them out, I liked what I heard. I don’t wanna talk your ear off about them because I am by no means an expert but there are plenty of sites that go into great detail on their history. I’ll just post the music and let you decide on whether or not you like them.

FALSE HOPES EP…DESSA DARLING
by C-Town on January 30th, 2007
Minneapolis MC & poet Dessa Darling is trying to give female rappers a whole new image. Her cerebral flow puts a lot of male artists to shame and its kind of reminiscent of Jean Grae (who is by far one of my fave MC’s period). She chooses some tight beats for her EP titled False Hopes. I personally look forward to hearing more of Dessa Darling. Check out her label Doomtree Records. www.doomtree.net/

CITY CLASSICS: Convicts
by C-Town on January 30th, 2007
Rap-A-Lot used to be the ultimate label. Everything they were putting out was of an excellent caliber. This particualr album raised the bar for straight gangsterism in Hip Hop music. Extremely hard to find, and not cheap when you can find it, Lord 3-2 and Big Mike made one heckuva debut with their eponymous first album, Convicts. Covering topics ranging from illicit sex, to beating your woman, to cooking up that A-1 yola, the Convicts cover crime. Classic baby…
