CITY CLASSICS: BREATH FROM ANOTHER…ESTHERO
by C-Town on March 29th, 2007

At the height of the Trip-Hop movement, Esthero released her classic album “Breath From Another” in 1998. Her laid back, chilled grooves with a Hip-Hop undertone garnered comparisons to Portishead and Sneaker Pimps. The album flows seamlessly and is quite possibly the perfect chillout album. Her voice is just as important as the music and she can blow. The native of Canada received major underground love and had fans waiting patiently for a follow up. It wouldn’t be until 2005 when she dropped her next full album but the tightness of “Breath” kept alot of folks satisfied as it is a timeless masterpiece.

ELECTRONIC ALCHEMY…TEENAGE BAD GIRL
by C-Town on March 29th, 2007

Teenage Bad Girl is a French Electronic duo who sounds like a mix between Aphex Twin, Daft Punk & The Basement Jaxx. They create funky and well layered Electro instrumentals that stretch the boundaries of Techno. They started making buzz when they released their first single “Hands of a Stranger” and it quickly reached the Dance charts. Their debut album “Cocotte” carries the same vibe and is what they call “Dirt-Electro”. If you’re a fan of Electronic then you should definitely give Teenage Bad Girl a listen.

PIMPIN AIN’T DEAD
by C-Town on March 29th, 2007
“Iceberg Slim (August 4, 1918 – April 28, 1992), also known as Robert Beck, was born as Robert Lee Maupin. He was an African American writer who started out as a pimp and whose writings were particularly successful among black audiences; his descriptions of the pimp lifestyle had considerable influence on African-American culture.Beck’s first work, a fictionalized autobiography called Pimp, was published in 1967 and was quickly categorized as being typical of the black ‘revolutionary’ literature then being created; however, Beck’s vision was considerably bleaker than most other black writers of the time. His work tended to be based on his personal experiences in the criminal underworld, and revealed a world of seemingly bottomless brutality and viciousness. His was the first insider look into the world of Black pimps, to be followed by a half-dozen pimp memoirs by other writers. The book sold very well, mainly among Black audiences; it was eventually translated into German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, and Greek. The book was largely ignored by White America.
His other novels include Trick Baby
(turned into a movie by the same name in 1973), Mama Black Widow, Long White Con, The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim, Death Wish, Airtight Willie and Me, and Doom Fox. As a Guardian obituary put it, ‘each one of his novels seemed bleaker and more violent than the last’.According to his publisher Holloway House, Beck had sold over six million books as of 1998, making him one of the best-selling African American writers (after Alex Haley). All his books were published exclusively as paperbacks.Iceberg Slim also released this album of poetry called Reflections in the early 70s”.
YOU GOT MAIL……….
by C-Town on March 28th, 2007
Got this in the mail today! They wanted the people of Turbo City to review this project by Ski aka Ski Beats. Here some additional info!
“Beatz, Rhymes & Samples: SKI BEATZ is a mixtape dedicated to, and hosted by, one of the most overlooked producers in hiphop history. Since his groundbreaking work with the Bizzie Boyz to his early 90’s work as a member of Original Flavor, Ski Beatz has produced some of the greatest hiphop songs ever - but dont take our word for it - just ask Marley Marl who once stated that if he could have produced any single song in hiphop history that it would have been “Streets Is Watching” (Jay-Z, produced by Ski Beatz). This free mixtape (mixed by DJ Raize of Bklyn) features many of Ski’s
classic productions (Jay-Z, Camp Lo, Fat Joe, Pacewon, etc.) mixed in with the original records that he sampled to create the beats. Towards the end you’ll
get to check out a few new tracks that Ski recently produced for artists such as
Cover,Jean Grae,and Camp Lo.”
THE TERRA EP…SABREPULSE
by C-Town on March 28th, 2007

Fans of Chip-Tune will know Sabrepulse as an 8-Bit musician who makes intricate soundscapes using video game sounds, but on the Terra EP, he slows it down for a wild downtempo ride. When you first pop this in, the listener is instructed to use stereo headphones as Sabre intentionally tweaks the left and right levels. He adds sounds and takes them away, to create a pretty cool listening experience. The songs are nothing like his Chip-Tune songs but rather more like some alien, ambient chillout. Give this EP a listen if you’re so inclined and don’t forget the headphones.
