SELF BIAS RESISTOR…FEAR FACTORY
by C-Town on April 26th, 2007

When I used to work at a record store, my managers were all Metal heads and would play the stuff 24/7. Slipknot, Staind, Puddle of Mud, all that stuff would get blasted at level 10, day in and day out. At first I thought it all sounded the same and really had no interest in it until one day they popped in Fear Factory “Demanufacture“. At first listen all I heard was “RAWR, RAWR, RAWR” and just dismissed it as another screaming band. As the album went on, I realized that these guys were different in the fact that they actually added melodies to their “RAWRNESS“. Instead of just yelling the whole song, the lead singer (Burton C. Bell), would break into a melody without warning. Well, this caught me off guard and made me decide to actually listen to them and I realized, this was a really good album (still one of my favorite Rock albums to this day). Straight thrashing guitar riffs and drums that sound like they’re being played by an octopus, give the album a cold, metallic feel. The lyrics are full of rebellion and pain( I had to read them in the cd booklet, as you really can’t understand shit Burton is saying unless you’re trained in the art of deciphering Death Metal vocals) but instead of downers, they serve as diesel fuel for your inner hellraiser. Make no mistake, though, this album is as heavy as it gets and if you’re not a fan of Metal, then steer clear away from this album.

EX-GIRL TO THE NEXT GIRL
by C-Town on April 26th, 2007

After a number of disputes with Prince, Denise Matthews, also known as Vanity, the lead singer of Prince-created Vanity 6, fled the Prince entourage in 1983 to pursue solo endeavors recording with Motown Records,Acting (Last Dragon) and tons of Cocaine. She left open an acting position for the role written for her by Prince in the film Purple Rain. They needed to fill the role so Patricia Kotero, Renamed by Prince as “Apollonia”, into Vanity’s role in the film Purple Rain, as well as the group, Vanity 6. The other two members of Vanity 6, Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie, joined Apollonia and reformed the group as Apollonia 6 for the film and one album. Man! Vanity was a looker and had a sexy singing voice, but so was Apollonia. Prince yousa muthfucka, you know how to pick em!

CITY CLASSICS: FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP…..INNER CITY GRIOTS
by C-Town on April 26th, 2007

Who invented that spitfire flow. Was it Chip Fu? Was it Twista? Was it Bone Thugs and Harmony? Let’s do the history for a second. Chip Fu and the Fu-Schnickens first single Ring The Alarm dropped in 1991, but the album FU Don’t Take It Personal dropped in 1992. Twista back then known as Tongue Twista’s first album Runnin’ off at da Mouth dropped in 1991.Bone Thugs & Harmony’s first album Faces of Death was released in 1991. All of those albums were released around the same time period, and equally possessed a form of that rapid fire flow. Freetyle Fellowship was formed in 1990 and released their first album To Whom It May Concern in 1991, and this album Inner City Griots was released in 1993. It possessed that same formula, but added a jazz format, the rhymes to the beats. I would say after further listen these cats were definitely were one of the pioneers, and could stake claim to originating that style of rhyme. This album is the shit, One of my favorites from when Hip-Hop had different styles, not just regions! Check it out…….

TROPICALIA: A BRAZILIAN REVOULTION IN SOUND
by C-Town on April 26th, 2007

Tropicalia in the late 1960s revolutionized Brazilian music mixing Psychedelic Rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), Samba, Funk and Soul into a truly unique combination. This is the first album to bring together all the artists involved in Tropicalia: Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and more. Os Mutantes, the sophisticated musical anarchists from Sao Paulo not only became the musical template for Beck, they were also discovered by Kurt Cobain on tour in Brazil who tried (and failed) to get them to support Nirvana.

BATTLE ROYALE: THE STREET WARS SERIES
by C-Town on April 26th, 2007

Now, I like like mixtapes as much as the next man but my main gripe is that they all have the same songs on them. I mean they might put 3 tracks that you dont have on one, so you gotta cop that one too. That’s why I always liked The Street Wars tapes by DJ P-Cutta because on most mixtapes the first song that gets buzz is MC Whoevers “diss cut”. P-Cutta just said “screw it” and made his mixtapes nothing but diss tracks going back and forth between artists. We all know most Rap beef is a marketing tool but who doesn’t like to hear a good burn from time to time. The thing that’s funny about Street Wars are that they are emotional periods in Hip-Hop that are frozen in time and it trips me out to listen to an old volume and look at who was “beefin” then and who is “cool” now. So, I’ll be dropping every Street Wars tape that came out, just so you can go back and trip out on the major Hip-Hop “beefs” at that particular point in time. Starting off, volumes 1 & 2, which chronicle the start of the Jay-Z/ Nas feud plus Mobb Deep vs. Jay-Z and State Prop vs. D-Block.
